History Of Riversdale
Riversdale House is situated in the flood plain of the River Allen a beautiful chalk river which flows into the River Stour just South of Wimborne.
The house orignally comprised of three sections, the oldest section in the rear garden, the centre section formerly "The Malt House Cottage" and the front section, a Victorian extension built circa 1850 always then known as "Riversdale House".
The Malt House Cottage (originally lived in by several generations of the Slade family) was in use when Poole Road Works was one of two malt houses employing 12 people in the early 1800’s. The walls are 16 inches thick and some dividing walls were made of reed and plaster, probably from the River Stour. There is still a brickbuilt well with fresh water fed from the river in what was the front garden of the cottage, though this was built over with the addition of the Victorian extension – all being skilfully blended together to make a large family house with servants quarters on the upper level.
The Victorian section of the house, with large rooms and high ceilings has an impressive original marble fireplace in the guests dining room. The front door pull bell is also still in use.
During the war years, the house was used by the fire service and the RAF, but for most of its history it has been a family home (once owned by an overseas diplomat I was told – still being researched!).
Being only 15 feet above river level has had its disadvantages – there are records and photographs of flooding in 1894 when the river overflowed its banks into Poole Road and again in 1977 when the owners at the time (Mr and Mrs Topham) had to leave by boat!
The property and walled garden at the rear has been renovated over the past few years by the current owners to provide the latest comforts but still retaining the charm and history from the past.
It is understood that the property has been operating as guest house for at least the last 35 years. If the reader has stayed here before we hope you enjoy the recent updates and new room layouts. Enjoy your stay at Riversdale House!
By the way - a special prize is offered to any guest staying who can identify the precise position of the well!
